And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. {Deut 8:18}
We are constantly bombarded with news of historic unemployment rates, mortgage crises, bank crashes, stock market plunges and a significant decline in the economy of this world. This period is being called the “Great Recession” which is a pun on the Great Depression of the 1930s.
As children of God, we have been given an excellent opportunity to transfer the wealth of the world into our hands. God has deposited in every one of us a talent, a special gift and therein lies the power to make wealth. Do not think little of what you have as any talent can be turned into a viable business. It could be something you have always been good at (think hairdresser, motivational speaker, graphic artist, make-up artist, etc) or a professional ability you might have acquired (accounting, retail, distribution, law, computers, etc). Whatever it is, now is the time to utilize your God-given talents to make wealth for the kingdom.
You might wonder, how can I start a business when there is no money? How can I get customers when everyone is broke? Remember that the Lord who gave you the vision, will make a provision. Our economy is not of this world but is based on the Word of God. All you need to do is step out in faith and God will direct your path and make your way prosperous.
Here are some helpful steps on starting your own business:
· First, prayerfully reflect inwards and ask God to reveal to you how you can turn your talents/skills into a sustainable business.
· Then, draw up your business plan. It might take a couple of weeks but this is very crucial as it will help you focus on what is important. Research the competition, market and demographics. Google is your friend.
· Choose a business structure and register your business. You might want to start as a sole proprietor and work your way up to a corporation.
· Establish an online presence. Get a website and utilize social networking tools such as facebook, twitter and linkedin.
· If you lack capital to start, there are tons of resources online on financial aid for small businesses and several targeted towards minorities and women. Again, do your research.
· Now, step out in faith and don’t look back! The first year is always the toughest but if you stick with it and don’t give up, the rewards are enormous.
You can never be truly financially free while working for someone else as they control your time, money and benefits. There is a reason this is called the Rat Race. Think of a lab rat trying to escape while running around a maze or in a wheel…a futile attempt. Being a business owner frees up your time for yourself, your family and the work of God and creates residual income which lasts a lifetime.
